Background and Training
Marriage and Couples Counseling in New York City was founded in 1983 by André Anthony Moore and a group of trusted colleagues whom André has come to know over the years and whose work he admires and respects. We are neither a corporation nor a training institute but individual therapists who work with families and couples in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens, share knowledge, make referrals and rely upon one another for peer guidance, advice and emotional support in our work.

In addition to holding graduate degrees in psychology, social work, medicine and philosophy, the members of Marriage and Couples Counseling in New York City have completed extensive course work and clinical training at:
* The Postgraduate Center for Psychotherapy and Mental Health
* The National Institute for the Psychotherapies
* Washington Square Institute
* The National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, and
* The Contemporary Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies.
Every member of Marriage and Couples Counseling in New York City has completed the renowned two year Specialty Training Program in Analytic Group Psychotherapy taught at the Postgraduate Center for Psychotherapy and Mental Health. This program consists of 24 clinical practicums that address key topics such as the therapist's use of personal feelings in understanding the subtext of family and couples' interactions; the deeper meaning of dreams and fantasies in intimate relationships; the impact of fetishes, phobias, eating disorders, incest and rape on the struggle for emotional and sexual intimacy; and recognizing when the therapist's insights, skills and emotional support are no longer needed by a couple or family.
Until recently, André Moore was also on the faculty of the Group Psychotherapy Training Program at The Contemporary Center for Advanced Psychoanalytic Studies where he taught family and group process.
Two Indispensable Ingredients to Successful Family and Couples Counseling and Therapy
Marriage and Couples Counseling in New York City offers two indispensable ingredients to a successful and meaningful therapeutic experience:
1. Highly trained, experienced therapists and counselors who are able to see through the defensive posturing, game playing, smugness and self-effacement in intimate and family relationships that disguise deeper feelings of helplessness, shame, guilt, panic, self-loathing or overpowering sadness.
2. Compassionate, caring therapists and counselors with whom you and your loved ones can feel comfortable so they can eventually earn your trust, help you feel freer, more spontaneous and, most importantly, better able to take - yes, take - things from those you care about, things you could never accept from them or let yourself have before.
