How to Set Manageable and Realistic Relationship Goals

relationship goals

In order to have a successful relationship, and one that is filled with love and care, it’s essential to set goals. Despite this, not many people know what a healthy and realistic goal is. It’s one thing to just set a bunch of goals for your relationship. You can take your relationship to a whole other level when you set healthy and attainable relationship goals you can reach together as a couple.

Try to Do Something New Once Per Month

It can be easy to get lost in the shuffle of everyday life. With work, school, kids, and friends, couples might get into a rut with each other. One of the most realistic relationship goals to set is to try to do something new once per month. This can be exploring a new city, trying out a new restaurant, seeing a new movie, joining a new club or anything that the two of you have never done before.

Have Date Nights Regularly

You must have date nights regularly if you want your relationship to succeed. Picking out new carpet or talking about your finances will not keep your relationship interesting and fresh. You need to have a regular date night, no matter what it involves. Want to see a movie? Great. Want to walk around the city? Even better. Want to set aside time to cook a home-made meal and talk? Also, a great idea. Just make sure you have regular date nights to keep the relationship exciting.

Have an Open Mind

To set long term relationship goals, you need to have an open mind. Not many people are able to do this, which is why their relationships tend to end quicker than they would like. Make sure your partner knows how setting goals can get real, especially when talking about having children and other important goals. Having an open mind and heart during this discussion can make setting goals easier than you could’ve imagined.

Compromise Is Important

A relationship is only successful when each person is willing to compromise. A goal you wish to attain might not be of interest to your partner and vice versa. You will both need to compromise when setting goals. Do not get angry or frustrated. Instead, learn to negotiate with your partner so you can reach a middle ground as you work to set healthy relationship goals.

Examples of Healthy Goals

Some examples of relationship goals you might be able to attain include:

  • Placing your trust in each other
  • Loving each other unconditionally
  • Sharing common likes
  • Having individual interests
  • Committing to building a future as a couple
  • Pushing each other to succeed
  • Having fun with each other
  • Honesty in all you do
  • Going through life as a team
  • Always being kind to each other
