Long-Term Relationship Myths You Need to Ignore

“Life is like a book of chocolates – you never know what you’re going to get.” That oft-used Forest Gump quote really does offer sage advice. Sometimes, however, people can’t help themselves and tend to generalize certain aspects of life. And never is it done more than with this crazy thing we call love. No matter who we ask, everyone seems to have some myth about relationships they need to share. Here are some of the most prevalent long-term relationships myths you need to ignore.

Relationship MythsYou’ll Always Be in Love

This is something that people hear all the times in movies, on tv, and in books. No matter how much time passes, you’ll always be madly in love if your partner is “the one”. Unfortunately, love is a tricky chemical equation that requires mental and emotional hard work to maintain. Sure, there will be times when you are “head over heels” in love with your significant other and fireworks will be flying high in the sky. But there will be times when you are feeling a bit cool for them. Love isn’t something that is always “on”. It ebbs and flows, just like the tide. But, rest assured, if you nurture your relationship correctly, the love will keep coming back, time after time.

Having a Baby Will Solve Our Problems

Having a baby is a wonderful, life-changing experience. However, will not solve your relationship issues. A baby, in this instance, is just a way to try and distract yourself from your issues, not a solution. Don’t let a baby become a prop. The only successful way to solve your issues is through nurturing a constructive and open dialogue.

Never Go to Bed Angry

While it is completely understandable to want to go to bed with all conflicts resolved, in most cases this just isn’t a realistic goal. That is, not unless you want to stay up until the weeknight thrashing out a hard-fought resolution. Conflicts are a natural part of any relationship. If you want to get a good night’s sleep, feel free to go to bed before your arguments are settled. Just make sure you do so with a mutual understanding that any remaining areas of contention will be discussed at a predetermined date later.

If It Was Meant to Be, It Will Work Itself Out

“It was meant to be” is a beautiful sentiment, but it really is never that simple. As Psychology Today points out, “Relationships are like ships: they need to be steered.” You can always let the ocean of life take your relationship wherever it may, but you run the risk of being dashed upon the rocks. Guiding your relationship through the waters of life is essential for making it work. Otherwise, a passive attitude may doom it to failure.
