The Most Important Thing You Can Get from Your Psychotherpist

Whether you’re in search of individual or couples psychotherapy, Ketamine assisted therapy or curious about psychedelics like MDMA Ecstasy, Psilocybin Mushrooms or Ayahuasca, it’s absolutely crucial to have a deep, trusting therapeutic alliance with a trained, licensed psychotherapist you can count on to be there with you, to hold you.

A psychotherapist who:

  • Has extensive knowledge of your early childhood attachments, the emotional climate of your family as you grew up and the life stressors, setbacks and traumas you’ve faced in your childhood, adolescence and adult life.
  • Is good at reading your non-verbal tells and the myriad ways your feelings get played out in your body. There’ve been countless times meeting with people when I realize the sadness in their eyes, the tension in their bodies are telling me an entirely different story than the words coming out of their mouth.
  • A therapist who commits to being there with you, especially if you’re taking Ketamine or psychedelics like MDMA Ecstasy, Psilocybin Mushrooms or Aychuasca, while you’re taking the medicine and in the days and weeks when you’re off the medicine, and finally,
  • A therapist who is always compassionately curious and devoted to helping you make sense of your deepest feelings.

None of us can truly know ourselves in complete isolation. If we’re lucky we’ve had someone earlier in our lives who helped us discover who we really are. But If we’ve been emotionally deprived, abused or traumatized, we go into hiding and carry a black sinkhole deep inside along with a lingering hunger to be seen by someone, anyone we can truly trust.

This is the therapist’s role: To reflect back to you who you really are as you delve into the unfathomable, hidden parts of yourself. By committing to always be there with you, the therapist – in the words of Leonard Cohen – helps you discover: The beauty lost to you, yourself.
